A cold snap hits the most anticipated launch of the year. 🥶 While GTA 6 pre-orders are already smashing every record, eight countries have just learned that they will be left standing at the gates of Vice City: the official digital version simply won't be sold there.
🚫 A blacklist revealed by Sony and Rockstar
This information doesn't come from a leak, but straight from official distribution channels. A look at the FAQ dedicated to the GTA+ subscription on Sony's store reveals, in black and white, the list of territories left out of the festivities.
The disappointment is all the harsher given that pre-orders have only just opened. Expect to pay $79 for the standard edition and $99 for the Ultimate edition: prices that residents of these regions won't be able to pay from home anyway.
To have any hope of roaming Vice City regardless, players will have to get creative — a PSN profile registered abroad, importing… But rumors of a 100% digital release, or even boxes sold without a physical disc inside, could seriously complicate things for the buyers concerned.
⚖️ Censorship, an old habit for the franchise
This scenario is nothing new for Rockstar Games. Since its very first installments, the Grand Theft Auto series has regularly run afoul of local legislation because of its unbridled violence, crude dialogue and depictions of crime. The studio has not yet given any official reason, but the franchise's track record speaks for itself.
There is no shortage of precedents. In 2019, the opening of the virtual casino in GTA Online sparked massive reactions: gambling-related content was ultimately disabled in dozens of countries so as not to break strict laws on betting and real money. For this new installment, explosive themes combined with increasingly conservative local requirements seem to have pushed Rockstar to cut any negotiation short.
Some nations go even further in their prohibitive approach. Such is the case of Tajikistan, which as early as 2024 took the lead by preemptively banning the entire franchise, along with other competitive titles such as Counter-Strike. The authorities justified the decision by claiming that these works incited murder and theft, exerting what they deemed a harmful influence on young people.
🎮 Creative integrity versus commercial pragmatism
This strategic choice highlights a strong editorial philosophy at Take-Two and its teams. Rather than wearing itself out designing watered-down, censored versions stripped of their substance to satisfy every government, the company prefers to accept a loss of revenue.
In the all-digital era, however, these virtual barriers raise questions about how effective they really are. The most determined players will inevitably find technical workarounds 🔐, from using virtual private networks (VPNs) to swapping foreign accounts.
Rather than a cut-down game for everyone, Rockstar is standing by a complete game for almost everyone.
