26 minutes and 49 seconds of gameplay, captured on PlayStation 5 — the first time we really see GTA 6 being played
It is done. 🍿 After more than a year without a single new image, Rockstar Games has released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look: 26 minutes and 49 seconds of gameplay, captured entirely on PlayStation 5. It is the longest demonstration in the studio's history.
And this is no narrated State of Play trailer: the edit watches like a TV series, with a story, dialogue and characters. Here is what we saw.
⚡ The essentials in 30 seconds
- You switch between Jason and Lucia mid-mission — one drives, the other rides along, and you can take control of either. They can also go their separate ways.
- Choices have consequences, and Rockstar says they go “far beyond” the honour systems of its previous games. An angel icon appears on screen after a good deed.
- Characters' bodies change: exercise builds muscle, food makes you gain weight, and lack of sleep shows on their faces.
- The world reacts: walking down the street carrying a rifle does not go unnoticed.
- Social media is everywhere in the storytelling — a kidnapping is even livestreamed by the victim.
🗺️ Leonida, from swamp to city
The demonstration largely takes place around Bayside, and moves through very different settings: Vice City streets, residential neighbourhoods, swamps crossed by airboat, seafront. NPC routines are put forward — passers-by live their lives, react, and their look changes from one neighbourhood to the next.
👥 Jason and Lucia: the real subject
Jason is a former soldier turned drug runner. Lucia is fresh out of prison. Their relationship, openly inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, is at the centre of the story and of the gameplay.
In practice: you can play the couple together or separately, and switch from one to the other within a single mission — during a car ride, a phone call, or on the way to an objective. One sequence shows Lucia walking into a store gun in hand, coming back out with a bag, and Jason picking her up behind the wheel.
🎮 What the controller actually does
We see the shooting mechanics, the driving feel and the preparation of a robbery. A chase shows Lucia losing the police after Raul reminds her that she is “a professional”.
On the activities side, the video runs through: scuba diving, jet ski, kayak, airboat in the swamps, parachute, basketball, dirt bike, street racing, gym, nightclub. Basketball even has its own aiming mini-game — you press when the circles overlap. Rockstar did not give a total number of activities.
😇 A morality system
This is the most talked-about novelty. During an interaction with a dog, Jason is offered behaviour options, and an angel icon appears on screen after a positive action. Rockstar has not explained exactly how it works, but says choices carry repercussions that “go far beyond the honour systems of previous games”.
📱 Social media, everywhere
It holds an unexpected place in the storytelling: feeds scroll inside the game, stories go viral there, and one sequence shows a kidnapping livestreamed by the victim herself.
💪 The body that changes
Exercise builds muscle, food makes you gain weight, and excess shows. Lack of sleep and long runs from the law mark the characters' faces. One sequence shows Lucia lifting weights in a gym.
💻 The technical rendering
Everything is captured in-game on PlayStation 5, Rockstar said so explicitly — this is not cinematic rendering.
To give a sense of the scale: the studio has more than doubled its headcount since Red Dead Redemption 2, the team in charge of driving includes professional racing drivers, and more than 50 real street artists painted the game's murals. Rockstar also spent years scouting locations in Miami.
🆕 What Rockstar has confirmed since
In the hours that followed the broadcast, several points the video alone did not address were clarified.
- The map is three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's — the largest open world Rockstar has ever built. Vice City alone is bigger than Los Santos.
- No microtransactions in single player. The nuance matters: Rockstar is talking about story mode. The studio has said nothing about GTA Online, where prepaid cards have existed for ten years — do not conclude that they are going away.
- No generative AI was used to produce the game's content, the studio states.
- The date is not moving: 19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
